Zero Vacation

With tourism causing almost a tenth of global greenhouse gas emissions*, sustainable vacations are on demand. Neste, the world’s largest producer of renewable diesel, and the Swedish island of Lidö are setting out on a journey towards a carbon neutral island. Over the course of the year, Lidö will become the Zero Island – an idyllic environment for a carbon neutral getaway. Lidö’s guardians, Olle and Hugo, have several plans for the island’s future.

Lidö is a beautiful nature destination. In everything they do, Olle and Hugo aim to preserve the beautiful nature of the island, but develop its functions further, to support an even wider selection of carbon neutral experiences.

Olle and Hugo already host events on the island, but they want to develop unique, carbon neutral event concepts that utilize the island’s beautiful environment. In the island’s outdoor chapel, for example, Olle and Hugo are planning to host their first carbon neutral zero wedding next summer.

“The key at Zero Island is creating a full, carbon neutral experience. To achieve a comprehensive outcome it is key to educate island staff about sustainable solutions and focus on the basics: the energy efficiency of accommodation and efficient recycling systems.

In addition, it’s important to innovate completely new experiences. We’ve been thinking about creating a sustainable off-grid area, where you can really live in a self-sustained environment with zero emissions. The nature conservation route on the island could have better signage and games for kids to spot rare species.”
