Extreme weather dunks raise awareness for climate change

Extreme weather events have increased over the past decades as a result of global warming. However, many of us still have a hard time understanding the connection. Neste and NBA star Lauri Markkanen have created climate dunks to help spread awareness on how the climate crisis can be linked to the increase in severe weather conditions. The dunks will be launched in cities that have a history of extreme weather. For every point that Lauri scores in preselected games this NBA season, we will donate 1,000 USD for disaster relief. Help raise awareness about climate change by sharing the dunk videos on social media.

Blizzard

The climate crisis increases the frequency of extreme snowfall. Warmer temperatures caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases hold more water, and storms supplied by increasing moisture result in heavier snowfall. The warming Arctic is one of the largest causes of more frequent blizzards.

Blizzards in Philadelphia

Philadelphia is known for its severe blizzards. Tens of inches of snow can fall in a day, which leads to jammed traffic and can make people’s lives more difficult. Even in March, Blizzards are nothing new to the residents of Philadelphia.

Hurricane

Warmer ocean temperatures and higher sea levels result in more extreme hurricanes. Warmer air leading to evaporation and larger amounts of precipitation provide more fuel for hurricanes to develop. The frequency of intense hurricanes has increased over the past two decades.

Flash flood

As the climate crisis continues to provoke sea level rise and increased rainfall, more communities are finding themselves flooded. Flash floods bring destruction to every state and will only get worse. Stronger storms, heavier precipitation and higher sea levels all contribute to flash floods that result in vast property damages and at their worst, losses of lives.

Heat wave

Heat waves are about 7.2°F (4°C) hotter than a century ago. As average temperatures rise due to the climate crisis, heat waves have become more frequent and severe. Extreme heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in the United States.

Wildfire

As the climate crisis progresses, temperatures keep rising at an accelerated pace. Dry lands become ideal smolder spots. As drought and heat continue, explosion like wildfires become more common.

Each point helps communities and cities facing extreme weather

Responsible choises

Food

“To me it’s important that food is both healthy and produced sustainably. Being an athlete doesn’t mean I can’t make better choices. To minimize my carbon footprint, I’ve stopped consuming red meat, and primarily eat ecologically produced food.”

Energy

“Directing energy into the right stuff is important, for me it’s sports and time with my family. I try to minimize energy consumption at home by turning off unnecessary lights and not letting the tap run when it’s not needed.”

Travelling

“I travel a lot, but I try to do it as responsibly as possible. I use public transportation whenever possible and drive an electric car. I wish renewable aviation fuels would be adopted widely soon, because flying causes a lot of emissions.”

Nature

“I’ve been raised to appreciate nature. Now that I live abroad I’ve learned to appreciate the environment we have in Finland even more. Seasons are important to me, but climate change is a real threat to them – if we do nothing, we might not be able to enjoy them in the future.”

Consumption

“I do my best to only buy what I need, and recycle a lot. At home in Chicago we recycle everything we can and try to minimize the waste our family produces. Recycling is an extremely easy way to minimize your carbon footprint.”

About the collaboration

Neste’s Journey to Zero concept aims to create a better, more sustainable future. Together with its partners, Neste explores and exercises solutions that drive the world towards a fossil free future. Lauri Markkanen, on the other hand, is a basketball player who has created a successful career in the NBA, but is also a father who is concerned about the future of the planet. Both Markkanen and people at Neste want to create a cleaner world for future generations.

Neste is a leading producer of renewable diesel refined from waste and residues, introducing renewable solutions also to the aviation and plastics industries. Wide range of renewable products enable our customers to reduce climate emissions.
